session info – what to expect
Whether your looking to have your session outdoors, on location, or in studio, I will work with you from the beginning to get perfect, timeless photos for you and your family. We can start out with a phone call, e-mail, or get together to discuss what you are looking for in your session, wardrobe ideas, and locations. I am both a natural light and studio photographer, but I pfer to take advantage of natural light whenever possible. Outdoor sessions should be scheduled for either early morning or in the evening before sunset, when lighting is the best. Of course, this is Minnesota, and I promise not to drag you outside when it’s 20 below unless you ask for it – your call.
That’s when the studio comes in handy. And, since we’re typically stuck indoors here at least 3 months out of the year (probably more like 6), I have a well-stocked studio full of backdrops, fun props, and a comfortable seating area to watch, look through samples, or just sit and have a cup of coffee.
A typical session will last anywhere from 1-2 hours, and includes as many wardrobe changes or backdrop changes as you would like. Newborn sessions take a bit longer. I make sure to block off 4 hours for each newborn session, but they typically last 2-3 hours. This allows plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes, and to get the baby in a nice deep sleep for some of those adorable squishy newborn poses that everyone loves. Scheduling a morning session within the first 10 days of birth works best for newborn sessions. Not due for a while? That’s OK! Book your session now, and I will write your due date in my book. I always leave some time available for newborns during the week.
About a week after your session, I will post a photo or two up on my blog if you have signed the model release. You can expect to have all of your photos finished and posted to a private gallery online within 2 to 3 weeks. Your gallery will be password protected, but feel free to share it with friends and family. Once active, your gallery will be up for 5 days, in which time you can place your order either online or in person. If you would like to schedule an appointment to view your photos online, along with viewing the actual proofs and product samples, I will gladly get together with you to do so once your gallery is ready for viewing.
You may notice my “what to wear” posts on the blog. These are to give you an idea of the types of clothing and outfits that work well with photo sessions. For a timeless feel, it’s best to avoid a lot of busy patterns, writing, and characters on shirts. Family members should dress to compliment each other. Not everyone has to be matching, but photos look the best when everyone has the same theme going. Most importantly, dress comfortable and be yourselves! Newborns and babies are often shot in just a diaper cover to show off that adorable baby chubbiness.
If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to ask! Feel free to call or e-mail me via the Contact tab above – I look forward to talking with you!
