I had taken head shots for Brian a while back and he mentioned that he and his wife were trying to start a family. I was beyond thrilled when I was contacted by his wife, Jaime, when they were looking for an Anoka maternity photographer. We chatted about ideas for their maternity session, and decided to do a classic maternity session at the studio and another more creative session outdoors.
We started off at the studio with hair done by Sarah Elizabeth Artistry, who made Jaime’s hair even more gorgeous by adding some curls that faded into beautiful waves by the end of our evening. Once Sarah finished her magic, we started the studio maternity session for some classic maternity images of a glowing mama-to-be.
After we finished up at the studio, we headed to an outdoor location for the next portion of the session. This is where the real fun began. Brian is a long time friend of my brother’s, so my brother and another long time friend of their’s met us at the location. We had a whole crew for this session! And we needed it, too. This is Jaime and Brian’s rainbow baby – a baby born after the loss of a previous baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or death in infancy. This term is given to these special rainbow babies because a rainbow typically follows a storm, giving us hope of what’s to come. Jaime had seen a photo online of a maternity session where they used colored smoke bombs to make a rainbow for the photos. I had never done anything like that before, but was totally up for trying.
When we arrived at the location, we hiked around a bit to find the perfect spot for photos and then we had the guys do a white test smoke canister to see how it was going to work (it was a really windy night!). As luck would have it, the wind died down and it ended up being an absolutely perfect evening. We had three rounds of smoke canisters for our crew to set off so we could shoot, adjust, and shoot some more. It ended up working out perfectly because we had a couple duds in the bunch, and I could composite images if needed. I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of people to hang out with for this session – I love that all their friends were so excited to help out, and we all made this come together to get some amazing photos for Jaime and Brian to remember this amazing time in their lives. I’ll be sharing photos of their sweet baby soon!
