Whether your babies are a few months old or entering adulthood, I want to document this time for you – the posed moments, the candid moments, and everything in between. As a Minneapolis family photographer, I aim for a mix of posed and candid photos that show your family’s love for one another. A professional hair and makeup artist can be added on to any family session, and I offer a complimentary studio wardrobe for mothers, babies and children (and I have a few pieces for dads, too!). I will work with your from the initial planning of your session all the way to the final delivery of your family’s artwork.
Family sessions can be held at my spacious and newly built Lino Lakes studio (just 15 minutes north of the cities) or at an outdoor location. I have several go-to places that are quiet, beautiful and dog-friendly if you want to bring along your four-legged family members. If you are looking to have your session photographed in a location that is special to you (your cabin, at your home, etc), I am available for travel, and welcome your input and ideas to create something truly unique for your family.
KIND WORDS
“Amazing, gorgeous heirloom quality photos! Melissa made our shoot stress-free with her calming, easy going personality and hand-picked elegant wardrobe. It was fun, felt natural and she gave direction in a way that made sense even to our small children, plus she captured everyone so beautifully. I could not ask for a better set of photos that will no doubt be of great value to my family for the rest of our lives. I have to say, her editing skills are superb and unique. Editing no doubt is a skill that not every photographer masters the way that Melissa does, and she works in natural light! We will definitely hire her artistic talent again in the future!” – Cheryl
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are your family sessions like?
Whether you choose a studio session or an outdoor session, I want your session to be relaxed and stress-free. That starts at the planning stages, before we ever meet. I will help coordinate outfits for your entire family, and help you decide on the perfect location. I can also set you up with a hair and makeup artist to meet with before our session time. All you have to do is show up, relax, and love on your people. Family sessions include a mix of traditional photos with everyone looking at the camera, and candid, emotive photos that show your family interacting and loving on one another.
Do you offer wardrobe for family sessions?
Yes! My studio wardrobe has over 100 dresses for moms to choose from (size XS to 3X). Brands include Free People, Baltic Born, Spell, Doen, and many more. I also offer clothing for babies, toddler and older children, as well as some neutral tops for dads.
How long does a family session last?
The length of the session depends a bit on the location and how many people are involved, but family sessions are usually an hour long. Sometimes it can take a little bit for small children to warm up to the camera, and I don’t like to rush things. I get some traditional photos with everyone looking at the camera, but I also want to allow time for you to play and interact as a family for those candid, emotive photos.
Do you recommend professional hair and makeup for family sessions?
Having professional hair and make-up done before your session is a great way to treat yourself so that you’ll look and feel your best for photos. I work with some amazing stylists who are fantastic at enhancing your natural beauty. A little soft eye makeup, loose waves and false lashes go a long way.
Do you photograph extended family sessions?
I do! The session fee is slightly different for extended family sessions, and is dependent on the number of people/families who will be participating. Extended family sessions typically include a large group photo, as well as individual family photos. We’ll talk beforehand and go over the different groupings you’d like, and bring a list the day of the session to make sure we don’t miss any requests.

The lighting looks so nice. Is it natural light?
Thanks Chris! Outdoor images are all natural light. Most studio image are with studio lighting.
I am looking to get information and availability on family sessions. We are a family of five, dad, mom and three kids. Depending on your opinion, possibly also taking shots with our two black labs. Preferably outdoors.
Thanks,
Stephanie
