It was several years ago that I decided I wanted to change directions and do more natural newborn photography. I had been using props and tons of different blankets and wraps…everything I *thought* I should be doing as a newborn photographer. I even took a workshop for posed newborn photography with Son Kissed Photography out of Oklahoma, and after a lot of time (and money) spent trying to make that work, I soon realized that it was just not my style.
One day I was voting on photos for a photography contest, and I came to the realization that all the photos I loved the most were more naturally posed newborn photos that showed authentic connection. I loved the soft, neutral colors and simple photos of babies – which was totally the opposite of what I was doing at the time! What an eye opening moment that was! I ended up taking everything off my website that no longer felt right in my heart, and started photographing more of what I love – natural newborn photography, with simple, baby-led posing.
I also realized at this time that a lot of the images I loved were a bit styled. I slowly started to build a studio wardrobe collection for my clients to use, and it has grown from an initial 10 pieces for moms and babies, to what is now several hundred pieces for mothers, babies, children of all ages and dads, too! I love being able to offer this service to my clients, and it has been a huge hit. For newborns, though – I still think a simple white onesie or wrap will always be my favorite.
Here are some examples from a favorite natural maternity and newborn photography session, with clothing from my studio wardrobe collection. The styling of the photos and clothing make for some gorgeous photos that would look perfect in an album or on a wall together.
