I’ve been photographing this family for many years (since the oldest was a newborn!) and every year we try to find a new location for their annual session. Last year we decided to take their family photos in downtown Excelsior. I live and work in the northern ‘burbs, so I haven’t spent much time in Excelsior, but it is such a cute little town! There were so many options for photos, including a giant mural, a path with some greenery, and a covered spot by the lake.
I always keep a close eye on the weather, especially for fall sessions when things can change quickly. It originally said it was going to be sunny the day of our session. Once the day actually came, it was cloudy all day. On my way to the location, I got a call that it was raining over there. When I pulled up, it was a solid drizzle. After thinking about it for a bit, we decided to wait it out and go to Olive’s for an early dinner. The pizza and bruschetta were amazing – totally hit the spot. By the time we were done eating, the rain had let up a bit and we decided to go for it.
We walked around this quaint downtown area looking for spots that would work well for photos. I had scouted the location out earlier in the week, but we still found some new and interesting spots that I didn’t see the first time around. There were so many cute buildings, doors and alleyways. The girls were excited to show me where they went to school, which happened to have some beautiful flowers out front that were great for photos. After more walking around, we ended up at Lick’s ice cream shop, which was the perfect way to end the evening.
Here are some of my favorite photos from this session. I’m excited to see this crew again next weekend for this year’s photo session!
